Will your grades earn the IB Diploma?
Add your six subject grades, TOK and the Extended Essay. See your total out of 45 and every rule that would stop the diploma being awarded, worked out the way the IB does it.
What the diploma needs
The diploma is awarded only when every one of these holds, whatever the total.
- A total of at least 24 points.
- No grade 1 in any subject.
- No more than two grade 2s.
- No more than three grades of 3 or below.
- At least 12 points across your Higher Level subjects (with four HL, the best three count).
- At least 9 points across your Standard Level subjects (5 if you take only two SL).
- No E in Theory of Knowledge or the Extended Essay.
- CAS completed.
Core points
Your TOK grade (rows) and Extended Essay grade (columns) together earn 0 to 3 points. An E in either fails the diploma.
| TOK \ EE | A | B | C | D | E |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 3 | 3 | 2 | 2 | Fail |
| B | 3 | 2 | 2 | 1 | Fail |
| C | 2 | 2 | 1 | 0 | Fail |
| D | 2 | 1 | 0 | 0 | Fail |
| E | Fail | Fail | Fail | Fail | Fail |
Questions
- How is the IB Diploma total worked out?
- Each of your six subjects is graded 1 to 7, which gives up to 42 points. Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay add up to 3 more through the core matrix, so the maximum is 45.
- What is the minimum to pass the IB Diploma?
- 24 points, and none of the failing conditions above. A student with 30 points and a 1 in one subject, for example, is not awarded the diploma.
- Is this an official IB tool?
- No. It applies the award rules the IB publishes, and it is the same calculation TYCHR's student app uses. Your school and the IB decide the real result.
